I found that the link to Russ Lipton's weblog was not quite fully qualified - I had omitted the "http:" protocol qualifier. I wonder if that was causing the rendering of my navlinks to break? Yup. I have had that link for a while (not that I am absolved of responsibility for the error); something must have changed for it to start breaking only those pages rendered for publication. 10:17:03 AM  Google It!
