I found this tip on the ActiveWords group. It beats duplicating then editing an existing directory.
  1. Create a new Advanced Scripting item to create a new Directory.
  2. Set check "Use Advanced Editor" on the Services tab of the Options dialog.
  3. You will now be able to assign ActiveWords to your own Directories using the Directory icon on the editing dialog. This can be very useful when organizing your own groupings of ActiveWords. For example, put ActiveWords for 'ford', 'gm', 'lexus', 'toyota', etc... in a Directory you name 'cars'.
