First thoughts on the Olympics

The opening ceremony was a bit long (and the rapport between Bob, Katie, and Jim was lousy) but it was surprisingly cool, nevertheless. I was glad to see that a reasonable compromise was reached with the whole WTC flag controversy. I'm thinking that flag ought to be stored under glass somewhere from now on - it's looking a bit tattered, and maybe it's seen enough action? My favorite part is the Parade of Nations - although it always pisses me off that the less important nations get to march in during a commercial break. It was nice to see the American flags carried by athletes from so many other countries - even the French!

SJ Merc and Linkrot

Dan is always railing on how the computer and software industry cares not one bit about users. I think he goes overboard on that. Now it's time for Dan to turn his jets on his own organization for one more time breaking all links into his Web writing.

I thought one of the really great things about a CMS is that it enables you to automate tedious things like link generation, so that changing things around doesn't break everything.

Interview With Jeff Snyder

(author of Nation of Cowards)
The track record of gun-free zones is, how shall we say this, less than impressive: post offices, schools, and now, airplanes. The events of September 11 could not have occurred but for the fact that air travelers are disarmed, and airplanes are a Second Amendment free zone.

Quick and Dirty Topic Mapping

I'm keenly interested in the problem of categorizing content, but the more I wrestle with the problem, the more it looks like a job for a bit of scripting and common sense. [ ... ] The essence of this strategy is to work bottom-up, rather than top-down. I don't start with a predefined set of topics. Rather, I allow them to emerge from the material as I work my way through it.
