It's the thought that counts...

My community-gifted iPod arrived today. Thanks. It's amazing that the weblog world can become something so material and so generous. Very nicely designed product. On the other hand, I have no idea how to use it. I opened the box, and read the instructions, and guys and gals, this is for people who use Macs. I'm not one of those people. I use Windows. I have a Mac, but I've never even turned it on. Uhhh.

I thought this might be a problem...

How do I make the picture of the iPod play nice with the <blockquote> tag? I want the picture aligned to the right, but I want the quoted text to flow around it. I know that I can do this with tables...

Letter to NPR redux

Cory Doctorow
NPR is a respected news-agency. When it takes the position that permission to link can be extended and revoked, it creates a climate of uncertainty among NPR's audience who use the Web. NPR is failing its commitment to journalistic ethics in promoti7588888] 5=8222 armful myth. It is misleading its stakeholders and betraying their trust in NPR's 78integrity.

Silly radio, links are for...,\\\\\\\\00666666666666666666

You know, I had a joke ready, but now that my psycho kitty has put in her two cents worth...

I'm still getting used to the idea that at any moment, a tiny little furball might land on my keyboard. It seems that blogging and cats are a popular combination — heck, Essential Blogging is covered with cats — but maybe there is some sort of training involved to keep the cat off the keyboard?

A Matter of Trust

Glenn Reynolds
As the homeland security bill works its way through Congress, members should be thinking hard about ways to build accountability into the system. Because a security bureaucracy that isn't trusted can't do its job. And a security bureaucracy that can't be trusted shouldn't be allowed to do its job.

Supreme Court Upholds School Drug Tests

Gina Holland
Justices ruled 5-4 that schools' interest in ridding their campuses of drugs outweighs students' right to privacy, allowing the broadest drug testing yet of young people whom authorities have no particular reason to suspect of wrongdoing.
Dan Gillmor - Parking Liberty at the High-School Door
We're conditioning an upcoming generation of adults to bow to authority — but not to respect it.

Day 14: Adding titles to links

Mark Pilgrim
What with weblogs being all about links, you would think more people would know about the title attribute, but I rarely see it. For those who don't know, all links can have a title, specified by the title attribute of the tag. (Do not go overboard with the title attribute. All things in moderation.)

The <title> attribute can also be used in place of the old JavaScript trick of changing the status bar text...

<a href="http://www.whatever.com/" onMouseOver="window.status='some annoying text that obscures the URL'; return true;">...</a>

Using the <title> attribute is much more friendly...

<a href="http://www.whatever.com/" title="some annoying text that DOESN'T obscure the URL">...</a>

A Race to the Bottom

Derek Lowe
A patent claim that "3-aminothingamabobs are useful for the inhibition of whateverase enzyme" is fine with me, as is one that says that "3-aminothingamabobs are useful for the treatment of diabetes." But the kinds of claims that are sending us toward a huge intellectual-property train wreck read like this: "Treatment of disease through inhibition of whateverase enzyme."
