DNA is Not the Exclusive Blueprint For Life. There is an article by Barry Commoner in the February edition of Harpers' Magazine which asserts that "The wonders of genetic science proceed from the premise that the DNA double helix is the sole agent of inheritance in all living things. The premise is false." In short, he cites experimental evidence which demonstrates that, while DNA has a crucial role in inheritance there are other molecules -- RNA, proteins and enzymes -- which have an equally important role. The discovery recently that the human genome contains a mere 30000 genes, 90% of which we hold in common with mice, is only the most recent blow to supremacy of DNA [kuro5hin.org]

10 Days in September. The Washington Post has a multi-part series, titled "10 Days in September", on the decision making process in the White House during the period of 11 September through 20 September, 2001. The series is based on interviews with the President, Vice President, other officials (at all levels of government), notes of National Security Council meetings and notes taken by several participants. In the paper, each day's installment took up at least a full page, all columns, some were longer. There's much to read here, and it should be read, in order to understand how the White House reached its decisions, and what it wants the public understanding of that process to be. [kuro5hin.org]
