Visual Rhetoric

Most of the pictures we see in the United States belong to the world of advertising and publicity. They're used to sell things, or to publicize institutions. They so completely dominate the environment, that pictures which aren't part of advertising or publicity, are incomprehensible. Sometimes even art teachers try to explain art pictures in the language of advertising and publicity.
