Chris Wolf, of Proskauer Rose, a law firm, is now presenting. Information is regarding what your legal exposure might be and what you would need to do to mitigate. Mildly interesting. Suggestions can be boiled down to:

1. Define reasonable security and document. 2. Document security plan (what to do if there's a breach). 3. Perform regular security tests (war dialing, intrusion detection, etc.) 4. Make sure there's a chain of command.

Gee...thanks for the info.

Steven Hunwicks of Diversinet Corp up now. It's a Canadian company that focuses on wireless security. Mostly military and public sector background. Presentation was primarily to announce a suite of wireless security products that they just completed. Nothing special.

I'm in the midst of the Wireless Security panel right now. Unfortunately, this has already turned into a vendor-fest. I got to delve into the financials of Aether Systems a great deal, as if I was a Wall Street Analyst and not really interested in security.

What a maroon! Well, at least we now know that their FY01 revenue was $110MM and they have $500MM cash on hand. Headcount is down to 600 people worldwide. They are not EBITDA neutral or positive right now.

Air2Web is now presenting. Don't know why...they are screen-scraping guys. Unfortunately, no one has said anything interesting yet.

All this talk about hackers but they're missing the obvious (and major) security issue of losing the device. Yes...not hackers or getting it stolen, but losing it. It's more akin to losing ones mobile phone.

Lots of PKI stuff but missing the point due to a foray into the obligatory "device diversity" slide.

The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association's annual conference is underway in Florida right now. Enhancing Wi-Fi's role at the conference was this morning's keynote address by Sky Dayton, founder of Earthlink and more recently of Boingo Wireless. Alan Reiter has blogged the keynote and discussion live as he will continue to do. Dan Gillmor, veteran tech reporter and columnist, is also blogging from the event. (The dominant mode of reporting may already have shifted.)

Sprint PCS's VP of Business Marketing: Jay Highly concludes.

Best case study from them is Cysco (the food services giant). They equipped their reps with a classic field service and crm application on pocket pc pda's. This was to solve the fact that their business day ends at 4pm and that prior to this, they were furiously entering as much orders as they could or it would have to wait until the next day. Benefits: improved inventory turns and they were also able to cut down receivables by 20 days.

Head of Oracle Mobile gave a pretty interesting presentation. Lots of great case studies including:

1. Siemens Business Services! 2. RITI energy in Sweden (the one where the postal workers read the meter as well as deliver the mail) 3. City of New York (find out where your car was towed to or what to do if there's a wheel lock installed)

Everyone seems to be saying the same thing: CxO's are interested and spending, but not much. They keep hearing that they want to look at something larger nine months from now.

The Oracle folks seem to be the furthest ahead here.

CEO of TSI Communications underscores the importance of SMS.

Case studies: Annheuser Bush SMS alerts to brew masters when parameters are off.

FRR Construction Broadcasts sms to members of construction community in Australia after demolition of a building. This allows those interested in certain building materials (in personal profile), thus ensuring their reuse.

Cool stuff. I think the crowd would have loved to hear about our JPMC alerts application...

After a morning of schoozing with various vendors, I'm attending the Wireless in the workforce session.

Keynote by Glenayre president and ceo pretty much as expected. In the midst of the the talk by the cto of Infowave.

Smart guy, explaining Infowaves notion of the 5-tier architecture. Interesting but he's making it a rather complicated technology discussion instead of describing the technology in the context of a case study. Lots of lip service about ROI but nothing specific yet.
