Get small to get big Highly focused companies -- those with a small number of strongly positioned businesses -- fared much better than diversified companies over the last decade. In fact, nearly 80% of the profitable, growing companies we studied held a clear leadership position in one core business. Many narrowed their focus to fuel growth, even in lackluster sectors.
Nokia's leadership in mobile handsets, for instance, resulted from the company's decision to shrink in order to grow from a refocused and stronger core. Founded as a pulp and paper mill on the Nokia River in Finland in 1865, the company grew into a conglomerate by expanding into rubber, energy and electronics before it zeroed in on the mobile-phone opportunity. In the 1980s, Nokia shed most of its businesses to focus on cellular phones, and continues to grow market share even in a global telecom recession. |

Apple's Ken Bereskin is proving that weblogs are extremely effective at enabling communication with customers. 1,400 visits before 7 AM EST. Job's should have one too with audio and video clips. UPDATE: Ken Dow pointed out that Steve Jobs does have a personal webpage that contains video and audio of homelife. Unfortunately, it is kind of lame. This not a term I would normally associate with Steve or Apple. He needs a weblog to put that media into context. It's too bad that Apple, the king of publishing, is so far behind in the personal publishing revolution. Of course, we are doing our best to help them out but more support from Apple would definitely make the jobe easier. [John Robb's Radio Weblog] |

Symbol moves smartness from access points to switch: In what is clearly part of a trend for enterprise-grade wireless LAN equipment, Symbol announced a new kind of AP controller switch. The APs for this unit are about 1/2 or 1/3 of the cost of a typical enterprise AP, and comprise more or less a NIC and radio in a box using power over Ethernet, and thus allowing more flexibility in deployment than DC-adapter based APs. The intelligence is in the rank-mounted switch, which handles network policy, authentication hand off, and other filtering tasks. [80211b News]1:42:24 PM ![]() |
How to Get Rich: "A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money. The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said, "Well, son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents. The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5 pm for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I'd accumulated a fortune of $1.37. Then my wife's father died and left us two million dollars."
