The mounting area available for communication modules continues to shrink as mobile phones add cameras or mount more memory. By 2005, modules will have to fit into an area only 10mm square. Remove the camera module from a camera-equipped mobile phone, disconnect the LCD panel, and snap out the rechargeable batteries. Then remove the audio components, like the speaker and microphone, and finally take out the keypad and case. What?s left is the communication module, which handles the data transmit and receive tasks. The mounting area is only 100mm2.

Sony Corp has developed a low power consumption tuner module to receive digital terrestrial broadcasting signals in mobile devices. The leading electronics maker integrates an RF tuner circuit on a 20mm by 16mm by 2mm module, realizing power consumption of less than 150mW, the industry's lowest level. The new module is expected to be used to receive digital terrestrial broadcasting and digital terrestrial radio broadcasting signals in mobile phones, personal digital assistants and other mobile devices.

Keiji Tachikawa, head of NTT DoCoMO, said that despite pledges by European and Asian carriers to unveil third generation cellular phones by the end of the year, there was little sign of progress. "A key goal to provide seemless 3G access anywhere in the world would only be achieved when more markets switch on to the service. It took 10 years to attract 1.1 billion subscribers globally to 2G handsets. So I think it will probably take another 10 years before we see a proliferation of 3G services in different markets across the world," he predicted. As for an even more advanced fourth generation cellphone, The firm aims to produce phones with a transmission speed 10-times faster than the already souped-up 3G model, capable of downloading high quality pictures and third dimensional images.However, "it will take another 10 years or so before we see the commersialisation of 4G."
