3G UMTS mobilizing the data world. Is WCDMA the same as UMTS? Or is UMTS part of GSM?. Is W-CDMA the same as UMTS? Or is UMTS part of GSM? Presumably W-CDMA is a member of the CDMA family? No? Well, which one means the same as 3G?

There seems to be some confusion out there. Every technology-based industry suffers from impenetrable acronyms and a tendency to drown in alphabet soup. But few get to the point where confusing nomenclature threatens the currency of their core brand. Jonathan Schwartz starts a blog. Jonathan Schwartz, the President and COO of Sun Microsystems, now has a weblog.

I've known Jonathan for several years, and he's one of the smartest, most with-it executives in high-tech. All you need to know about him is that he was thrilled when I introduced him at Supernova last week as a "maverick." At the same time, he's totally focused on returning Sun to its former glory, and reinvigorating the IT sector along the way. We had a great conversation at the conference -- check out Heath Row's transcript.

I fully expect that the blog will reflect the man himself, not some PR scribe.

Truckstop.net Chases Big Contracts. Truckstop.net offered Landstar a special program that offers Landstar drivers a discounted subscription rate: Trucking company Landstar has thousands of drivers who can now sign up to use Truckstop.net hotspots at a discount. The drivers can use the networks to email delivery confirmations and look for new loads on Landstar's board. The deal doesn't have any sort of figure associated with it for how many drivers will sign up and signing up is totally voluntary so it's not clear how significant of an agreement this is. But, it's a smart idea for Truckstop.net to go after large trucking companies or other organizations that have workers who are on the highways often as a way to load its network.
