Tail wagging the dog.

I'm seeing a lot of write-ups about The Long Tail these days. Has anyone else noticed that this is just a refinement and extension of Content is Not King?

Sports Geek Heaven -- Live Baseball for the Mobile Screen. Sports Geek Heaven -- Live Baseball for the Mobile Screen By Gail Nakada, 8 April 2005
The weather is warming up and that means a lot more than Cherry Blossoms in this country -- bring out the beer and bentos! Baseball season is back! The new season also brings some cool new technology that will knock pro baseball off the TV screen, out of the ballpark, through the sports bar doors' and right onto your keitai screen. Like many traditional staples of entertainment here, pro baseball is going mobile -- but with a decidedly animated twist.

Tokyo-based Craftmax's Digital Stadium broadcasts select American and Japanese pro-ball games over DoCoMo 3G cell phones transforming live action into an animated play-by-play, pitch-by-pitch rendition of the game right down to ball speed and trajectory, complete with an electronic scoreboard, the roar of the crowd and sound effects for hits, runs and score changes. This is not fantasy baseball, and not an online game, but rather The Real Thing -- rendered into animated avatars standing in for flesh-and-blood players. Check-out this quick video preview below of our upcoming program including a product demo and chat (which was for the most part in Japanese) with the company founder Mitsumasa Etoh.

From time-shifting to media-shifting. It's great to be able to time-shift media, but more and more lately I wish I could media-shift as well. Consider this fifty-minute interview1 with Jim Gray, on MSDN's Channel 9. Why haven't I watched it yet? Not because I lack interest, or time, but because the content isn't available in a format that suits the kind of time I have. In this case, the format would be audio, and the kind of time would be walking-, jogging-, or driving-time. ... [Jon's Radio]

Apple Chipset Bombshell: Super Multimedia Chip Licensed for Unknown Device.

gpod.jpgPrepare for speculation a-go-go: Apple just licensed a chipset that is capable of not only music and video, but 3D graphics and image capturing with resolutions up to 8-megapixel. Silicon Valley Watcher is reporting that Apple has contracted to use a chipset from UK company Alphamosaic. And not only is the chipset powerful, it can be integrated with chips from Alphamosaic's parent company Broadcom to provide wireless communication, from cell phones to Bluetooth to Wi-Fi.

Now as much fun as it is to wonder if Apple is making a video/gaming/cellphone/camera/music device, you also have to realize that Apple often doesn't exploit the full power of the chipsets it licenses (the chipset that powers modern iPods is capable of video, for instance). So while Apple could be designing the ultimate convergence device (or Newton II), they could also just be adding video or 3D menus to the new generation of iPod. What we do know is we won't see a product using this hardware until at least next year, so we've got lots of time to wonder.

Who knew that the April Fool's gPod hoax [pictured] would be so quickly probable?

Scoop! Brit chip designers score coup as Apple picks chips for next gen mobile multimedia device...the m-Pod? [SiliconValleyWatcher]

Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Gadget Bag.

miz_gadgets.jpgTetsuya Mizuguchi (aka 'Miz') is the creator of Rez and Lumines, arguably the first hit game for the Sony PSP. He's started up a new blog on 1UP and it just so happens that his first post is very 'What's in My Gadget Bag'-like. None of the gear is too mind-boggling, but it's still fun to read reflections on the social impact of gadgetry from one of videogaming's most innovative designers. (Thanks, Ami B!)
