Yahoo! powers Softbank's drive on DoCoMo. Subscribe to i-Mode Strategy We have been bullish on Softbank's ability to harm DoCoMo in the Japanese market, and Son-san's attack on DoCoMo is not only coming from the power of Yahoo! Japanâo[dot accent]s 43m subscribers but also underwritten by its strong revenue and profit growth. Y! Japan reported fourth quarter profit growth of 26% to $110m and revenue climbed 31% to an about $500m for the year, and interestingly operating profit grew even faster âo[base "] up 35% for the last fiscal quarter compared to a year earlier. That will help fund his mobile network upgrade plans and other mobile initiatives. Is there an i-mode project or news that you think we should feature? Email tips@imodestrategy.com. Thanks! What will change to make i-mode an international success?. At ATRE 2006 in Beijing, when Yoshito Hori, Chairman & CEO of Globis Capital Partners, was asked if i-mode had been a success outside of Japan his answer was simpler - "No". [i-mode Business Strategy]

iPod Audio Navigation Patent.

iPod%20audio%20interface.jpgAs iPods are further integrated into cars, there's a danger of users T-Boning some poor salary man because they were putting on "In the Air Tonight" instead of paying attention to the road.

Now Apple releases a patent for the iPod that tags each song, genre, artist, actor, and other relevant info with their audible equivalent. This means when you're navigating the menus, the iPod speaks the name of the item you're on so you never have to look down. Useful and safe.

But, er, Apple? The least you could do is spell Phil Collins' name correctly. Now he's going to drown you and sing about it at a concert. That's so true.

It has GPS, a 9.0-megapixel camera, a sliding screen, and can act as a friend with benefits on lonely nights. Feh.

Crank Calls: Motorola PVOT.

mot_handcranked.jpgDesigner Andre Minoli has created the hand-cranked Motorola PVOT phone, aimed at developing countries. It gives up a minute of talk time for every 25 turns of the crank, giving new meaning to the term "crank calls." All that cranking charges up a AA battery inside, powering a 125x125 dot matrix LCD controlled by a futuristic-looking "Eraser Shield" keypad.

Minoli's Motorola PVOT is a great design not only for developing nations, but it could come in handy for us developed countries, too, as we wind our way through Peak Oil and into World War III. If the phone's durable enough, it might even last until World War IV, which will no doubt be fought with sticks and clubs.

Channel 4 New Media Profits Plunge In 2005.

UK’s Channel 4 made a measly ¬£300,000 in profits on the new media side, during 2005, a tenth of that made the previous year, according to the broadcaster’s annual report, reports NMA.
The drop, the company says, was a result of investment in the sector: new broadband documentary channel called FourDocs and the mobile portal.
