Melissa and I watched Road to Perdition last night. A quick scan of the reviews show that we're in the minority for not liking it. Great acting, great production values, great cinematography, but I found myself not caring one damn bit about any of the characters, and wishing they'd show just a fraction of emotion so I might bother to care. This CNN review pretty much covers how I felt about the movie. The Ebert quote is also pretty accurate: After I saw "Road to Perdition," I knew I admired it, but I didn't know if I liked it. I am still not sure. It is cold and holds us outside.
I'm not sure if I can recommend it or not: might be one of those movies you're "supposed" to see. But then again, there are a number of movies that I didn't necessarily like or enjoy that I would recommend (Saving Private Ryan, for example). This is not one of them. |

A new beginning, of sorts, can be found at www.leukemiasurvivor.com. This is a domain name that I'd registered a couple of years ago in preparation for the 2000 Twin Cities marathon. It has been resurrected.
The goal is pretty simple: finish what I'd started in 1992 with The Beginning, using weblogs as a mechanism to work with bite-sized pieces. It will not be your typical weblog, though. It'll be a work in progress, a collection of my yesterdays. |
