2004 Presidential Transition
The Denver Post editorial staff sounds off on President Bush's nomination of John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations [March 10, 2005, "Fox is pick for U.N. henhouse"]. They write, "In choosing Bolton, the administration ignored the misgivings of Sen. Richard Lugar, R- Ind., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who is said to have warned that Bolton couldn't be confirmed for deputy secretary of state. Bolton was effusively praised by his new boss, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. 'He is a tough-minded diplomat, he has strong record of success, and he has a proven track record of effective multi- lateralism,' Rice said. 'Through history, some of best ambassadors have been those with the strongest voices, ambassadors like Jean Kirkpatrick and Daniel Patrick Moynihan.' But both of them knew when to raise their voices and when to speak softly, too."
