Coyote Gulch welcomes Denver's Auditor Dennis Gallagher and his guest post about the January 30th special election:
Protect your right to vote. Vote for Referred Charter Amendment 1A
"Democracy's ceremonial, its feast, its great function is the election." This great quote, this high standard from H. G. Wells failed miserably in Denver's November 7th, 2006 election. The time for change is now. Vote for Referred Charter Amendment 1A.
In last November's election fiasco in Denver, estimates of how many were denied the right to vote vary. Some say 20,000. Others say as high as 25,000 voters. On KGNU radio on Wednesday on Ken Freed's noon time show, Morgan E. Felchner, Editor of Campaigns and Elections Magazine, indicated Denver has the worst record in the nation for election woes. This can't happen again. Vote to reform the system. Vote for 1A.
The system is flawed in Denver. The election fiasco was the result of a failed system. We need to change that failed system. We need to change to an accountable elected clerk like 62 other counties in the state. The elected clerk system is one that is tried and true and will reform the dysfunctional system in Denver. The auditor's office alerted the mayor, his appointed clerk and the election commissioners that there were problems with the system as far back as May of 2006. They did not listen; they failed to test adequately; they had ineffective backup plans. This can't happen again. Vote for Amendment 1A.
The answer is the special election to change the Denver system to an elected clerk. City council placed a special all mail election for January 30th, 2007. The ballots should already be at your home. Mark your ballot on the "yes" line and return your ballot. Put two 39 cent stamps on your envelope just to make sure it gets back by January 30th. Or you can drop your ballot off at the election commission at 303 West Colfax.
Tell your friends and neighbors to support the elected clerk for Denver. Vote for 1A.
I hope you will join with the Denver League of Women Voters which has carefully and thoughtfully encouraged a "yes" vote on Amendment 1A in this mail-in ballot.
Let's reform Denver's electoral system now. Let's reform our democracy in Denver from the current famine to a feast where all the voters can come to the table. Let's reform the system now with a functioning elected clerk accountable to the voters. Let's bring trust back into the election system now.
