I was school district smart. An earlier post details both the process by which we at mlk seduced the district into the purchase of a Frontier server and my deep skepticism about the "powers that aren't"'s motivation. So, naturally, today we received confirmation of a server-killing budget freeze. (Thank you Enron et al.) Except - hah hah! I still had $2K sequestered in my AB 862 library budget. I schmoozed our intrepid inside-the-NOC guy, and sure enough, there's a pared down server that we can afford just for MLK Frontier use. Erin Clerico tells me with the addition of some radically discounted third party RAM, this little Compaq will do our 575 bloggers just fine. (anybody have any suggestions for tweaks, make a comment.)

A note of bitterness in the triumph, however. Yeah, yeah, we're in tight economic times - I don't argue that point. BUT - if "the powers that aren't" really understood the potential and the already realized successes that come with weblog access for our staff and students, they would have found a way to do this without needing: 1.) my imagination; and 2.) my library money. I mean, comon' folks, find an old box, some extra cards, and $299 for the software. Hell, they just found us 55 17" monitors when they thought they needed our help in training.
