Marilyn Crispell, pianist (and thinker), in a highly readable interview (would love to hear her say this)..."I like the interaction between set structure and improvisation. I am convinced that musical freedom is only bearable against the background of great musical experience. You have to know what you're doing and you have to know the reasons why you are not doing something."
Is this from the player's aspect? I think it's saying that you have to know the foundation before you can build on top of it...really use it. The words sound kind of funny if you think about it from a listeners view point. Do I have to be intimately involved in an artist over time (experience) for their music to be 'bearable' to me? It's got to be different for listeners. They (we) have to make a connection of some kind right away to bring us back to listen again (and get that experience). And it also points out that Jazz music is somewhat of a committment that we all make to try to 'get it', no matter what the artist is trying to say or if we dig it (or not).
Marilyn will be in town Wednesday, 3/20/2002 kicking off Atheneum Jazz at The Neurosciences Institute Spring 2002, so I did a little research to find the interview and used AudioGalaxy to hunt down some samples, which was successful and had me listening to her with the lineup for the date (Gary Peacock-bass, Paul Motion-drums...studs) on Nothing Ever Way. Anyway. (Albert's Love Theme). Introspective would be how I put it on first listen, but I'm also introspective with the inside of my eyelids right now. Maybe I can get Marilyn to talk to us on the air next Thursday when we're much more awake. Marilyn?

After the show tonight (thanks DF), I was able to scoot down to 4th & B to see the second set of The Newport Jazz Allstars. Claudia and others from Jazz 88 were awaiting and had already heard what sounded like a great first set. These are all stud players (Cedar Walton, Howard Alden, Peter Washington, Justo Almario, Terence Blanchard, Idris Muhammed) and they played together well in different setups, as the set list attests too. I especially dug 'Goodbye', with Terence, Peter, and Cedar in a trio...such great playing by Terence. I also liked Justo's tune 'Salvation Army', which the author played some killer licks on also.
There's a quick slide show from the gig (you can also click the picture below), which for the most part proves that I need to seriously scale up on the camera if this is going to work. Just imagine these shots with the great lighting, but being clearer and closer...

Claudia and I took Terence over to Downtown Charlie Browns for an Arrogant Bastard (me-o) and Vodka/Cranberry (Claudia/Terence). Terence teaches at U New Orleans (Jazz department head) and USC (sounds like visiting professor), in addition to lots of work on movies (a Spike Lee documentary on Jim Brown, Ice Cube's new flick, others) which gives him something different to stretch on other than the standard Jazz writing and playing....not that that's a bad gig at all. Kind of fun to wrap with another regular guy...that's getting paid for expressing himself...right on, right on!

Scrolling down to the 44th Grammy Winners, Production Field, I see the name of Manfred Eicher winning Producer of the Year, Classical. I was like, "Wow, I know that name. Where?" Didn't take long to remember that George Varga's Post Ken Burns Jazz class had an entire session on the label that Eicher founded, ECM. And he was the strong guiding hand from what we heard. His vision, or as George put it, "esthetic". Doesn't surprise that Manfred picked up the award. Congratulations.
