Marilyn Crispell, pianist (and thinker), in a highly readable interview (would love to hear her say this)...
"I like the interaction between set structure and improvisation. I am convinced that musical freedom is only bearable against the background of great musical experience. You have to know what you're doing and you have to know the reasons why you are not doing something."

Is this from the player's aspect? I think it's saying that you have to know the foundation before you can build on top of it...really use it. The words sound kind of funny if you think about it from a listeners view point. Do I have to be intimately involved in an artist over time (experience) for their music to be 'bearable' to me? It's got to be different for listeners. They (we) have to make a connection of some kind right away to bring us back to listen again (and get that experience). And it also points out that Jazz music is somewhat of a committment that we all make to try to 'get it', no matter what the artist is trying to say or if we dig it (or not).

Marilyn will be in town Wednesday, 3/20/2002 kicking off Atheneum Jazz at The Neurosciences Institute Spring 2002, so I did a little research to find the interview and used AudioGalaxy to hunt down some samples, which was successful and had me listening to her with the lineup for the date (Gary Peacock-bass, Paul Motion-drums...studs) on Nothing Ever Way. Anyway. (Albert's Love Theme). Introspective would be how I put it on first listen, but I'm also introspective with the inside of my eyelids right now. Maybe I can get Marilyn to talk to us on the air next Thursday when we're much more awake. Marilyn?
