Jupiter and moons, 31 March 2004 a digitally enhanced photograph

This photograph was taken with a Nikon D100 fitted with the AF 180mm f/2.8D ED IF lens, the very same lens that took these terrestial pictures, and these canine photos. The image of Jupiter is the product of clever masking and manual blending of a concurrent planetary exposure. The mottled blue and red background is the result of pushing with Adobe Camera Raw, averaging the digital noise with Grain Surgery, then radically increasing the contrast using Curves in Photoshop.

The moons are, from right to left, Europa, Ganymede, Io and, far off to the left, Callisto.
