Beach for One
The intersection of the Pacific Ocean and the land mass of California is commonly known as the beach. Typically, in the morning, a fog or haze and low clouds hang above the beach, restricting the amount of light and keeping the temperature down. So on this mid August morning, when temperatures will be triple digits a few miles inland, the beach is about 69°F and morning light is filtered and diffuse. No line could be seen between the sea and the sky.
A single gull swept back and forth along the breakers looking for fish in the thin water of the breaking wave. Even this gull had the waves to itself. Only the bird and a fisherman came out to see this haunting seascape, giving a solitary, even lonely, feeling to the place.
Soon the gull is joined by another fisher from the land.
Eventually the sun burns the fog off and the rest of the people appeared.
