SHORT SPIEL

Rate music on EM. A reliable directory of independent music is what the world needs in order for competition to emerge to the least-common-denominator stuff fed to us by the major labels. Why? Because the majors provide a function of filtering music, so that their least-common-denominator stuff is at least of a certain quality level. There is no such filter in the independent world, and it is very easy for anybody with or without any talent to record an mp3 and upload it. Together, these realities make it so hard to find the worthwhile stuff that most people just don't bother.

We can change that. All that is required is for YOU to rate music on EM.

FULL-LENGTH VERSION

In order for their to be an alternative to Microsoft in the world of operating systems, individuals had to work together to create Linux. The more work that was done, the more useful it was. That created a virtuous circle where, as it got more useful, more people felt motivated to help, making it still more useful, until finally it could truly compete as a full OS.

In the world of the sales of recorded music, the major labels are in the same position Microsoft is in in the computer world. They pretty much control everything, and many people don't like the way they do it.

But right now, the alternative world is too unorganized to really compete. In particular, there is an enormous amount of junk music (particularly now that practically anyone can have a "digital recording studio" if they want). So, trying to find the worthwhile music outside of the major labels is a time-consuming and all-too-often fruitless endeavor. So, by-and-large, people stick with the stuff put out by the majors. Most of it may not be very good, but at least it's reliable.

What is needed is a RELIABLE DIRECTORY OF THE BEST INDEPENDENT MUSIC. That would solve the problem, and make the independent music world a viable competitor to the majors. That would be the independent music world's Linux.

It can only be created by people. But they need a platform to do it on. Linux emerged almost as soon as the tools existed to create it (including widespread internet access so people could work together). But, the equivalent tools haven't existed in the music space.

The equivalent tools in the music space must, first and formost, provide resistance to fraudulent ratings. That's what EM does. We have a mathematical processor, based on years of thought and months of coding, that provides that resistance. It makes it very hard for people to manipulate the ratings for their personal benefit; and the result that the ratings are reliably of benefit for everyone.

Emegergent Music is our attempt to supply the necessary tools, starting with fraud resistance. Because of a number of aspects of the site, EM is a place where the necessary music directory can come into existence. All that is needed is YOUR help in the form of rating the music you find here. That's it. If you do that, the world will have an alternative to the major labels, just as Linux is an alternative to Microsoft.

It WILL happen. The question is whether it happens now or later. There's nothing holy about EM; we just happen to be making the tools first. If EM doesn't succeed in providing the seed around which the necessary efforts of thousands of music-loving people will coalesce, another platform will provide that seed at some future time. It doesn't really matter, except that EM exists now; there is no need to wait. We have create what we think are the necessary tools; if we're wrong and we have to modify them in some way to make them work for you, just let us know. We are totally driven by user input and have made many changes to make the site work better for people.

Help us create a world in which independent musicians of any style can thrive and earn a living that rewards the good work they do. Help us create a music world that isn't limited to the least-common-denominator music the majors find can be marketed at the least cost per sale. Help us create a world in which trimness of midriff isn't more important than being able to sing. Help us create an alternative to all that, one in which music quality is the only determinant of how successful a musician is. Come rate music recommendations on Emergent Music.
