The Pulitzer Prize
It never dawned on me that there are actually a bunch of Pulitzer prizes awarded each year - I thought it was just the one, although with hindsight, it should be obvious that there are the journalism awards (turns out there are 15 categories of journalism Pulitzers alone) and then books and stuff ("letters drama and music" with 7 categories).
Initially I stumbled across this Amazon.com list while looking for information about Art Spiegelman's 'Maus' - a book in comic format about the Holocaust.
There is of course everything and more that you could possibly want to know at Pulitzer.org. The winners of the 2001 prizes are here, along with the winning entries in some cases: here's the Chicago Tribune's "Gateway to Gridlock" series of stories, which won the Explanatory Reporting prize for 'its clear and compelling profile of the chaotic American air traffic system.'
Another Unsung Casualty
Further stumbling. Came across a provocative short story on Michael Gentry's weblog, which I return to month after month, although he seems to have been rather hard on himself lately. His book reviews make me wish we could just pay him to read and then write about it. Here's his review of The Book of Jeremiah.
