Hollywood Locking Down your Box

I'm constantly surprised this isn't a bigger story.  From what I can gather, both the movie business and the recording industry want the US Govt. to mandate by law that every computer and every other piece of digital hardware has copyright hardware built in, to prevent it from moving digital information around, as you, and nature, intended.  Right - what they have in mind beggars belief.

Here's one example. Check out the article in the LA Times which talks about the 'Broadcast Protection Discussion Group', and their failure to agree what we should be "protected from", and how it should be "protected".  However, they're in no doubt what's at stake:

"We want to head off the Napsterization of digital television."

Don't scoff at the possibility that they will neuter your computer.  There are tectonic, primeval forces of change at work, and these powerful entertainment industry people have realised it. They will do anything, and are paying off congress to achieve it,  to stop progress in it's tracks, and use the law to fossilize the current status quo, in order to keep their snouts in the trough.
