Sleep in a tent: 3%
Bizarre Winter Olympics story from Wired. For years athletes have travelled to train at high altitude to improve their (sea level) competition performance. We're talking about an enormous difference - the three percent in the title. So all these athletes are spending a fortune to travel and spend time at altitude just to stay competitive. With you so far.
And then someone designs a hypoxic tent. No I didn't know either. That'll be one with less oxygen than normal. The athletes sleep in the tent and get high altitude effect without leaving home.
"Anti-doping advocates such as Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and British track star Paula Radcliffe have championed the use of altitude tents as an alternative way to boost peformance without using drugs."
And the International Olympic Commitee is thinking about banning the tents? Come again?
"While no official decision has been announced yet, the International Olympics Committee has decided to ban hypoxic tents from the Olympic village, according to a spokeswoman for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games."
