Instant Popularity
How do you get Google to notice you? Why Google? Well, because the other search engines take paid listings they aren't worth the disks they're stored on. Google is as close to authoritative as you can get. So how can you get Google to notice you?
That's simple, now. Get a link from a site that Google already notices, preferably one that Google thinks highly of. This is a lot easier than it looks. Notify weblogs.com that your site has updated. Keep it up to date, and when Googlebot comes crawling, there you are.
You still have to drive traffic to your site, but now, at least, the Internet knows you exist.

c|net looks at photo finishing services. The InfoTrends pundit they quote is observant. However, two items: 1) iPhoto, 2) no specific mention of the remaining players (snapfish, kodak, etc.) and 3) it takes forever to upload high-resolution pictures at 56K. Because of 3) kiosks are a good idea — if you can spare a compact flash card while your pictures are developed.

CALD is in trouble. There's enough room in the market for multiple Linux distributions, but not enough for multiple distributors with high overhead. The CALD price has been hovering just above OTC for some time now, so that a puchase looks like a good deal. But is it? IBM or SUNW would be a interesting combination. I don't think SUNW could stand the distraction, nor could HWP, but IBM might be able to derive some value from the UNIX property held by CALD from their SCOC acquisition, through smoothing the migration path from what remains of the SCO UNIX installed base to AIX/L (Monterey).
