Learner Information for Europe: Context. Meaning, Trust, and Audience.

Attached is my position paper for a meeting of experts on learner information in Cambridge on October 26 organized by the Learning Interoperability Framework for Europe. In it I suggest that making progress in puting the impressive array of currently available learner-informtion-related standards and specifications currently available in practice requires "forging agreement about meaning and policy, not just technology. Key issues to resolve include representing the context of learning, developing common vocabularies, building trust infrastructure, and cultivating commercial audiences."

Portfolios as a bridge between academic and student Affairs.

At Integrations 2005 last weekend, I attended a session on the role of the affective in integrative learning at Oxford College of Emory University. The first speaker was Patti Owen-Smith, who leads the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Campus Program cluster on Cognitive-Affective Learning, which I helped support while at AAHE. She shared some of the results of her study students' most powerful learning experiences. For most students, these experiences occured outside of the classroom. The most common theme across the 200+ experiences was a sense of relationship, of making a meaningful connection to another person or group.

Electronic Portfolios for Integrative Learning.

Attached are my slides from the workshop on electronic portfolios for integrative learning that I led at Integrations 2005 last week. I presented a 10,000 foot overview of electronic portfolio practice at the beginning and a bit about the conceptual design of the Open Source Portfolio at the end. During the bulk of the time, the participants and I read examples of electronic portfolios from a number of programs around the US that illustrate different dimensions of integration
