Connecting Your Class Blog to the World of Search.

I’m excited and honored to be part of the Philadelphia Area Educational Technology Conference taking place next week at Haverford College. The conference focuses on “Teaching the Millenials.” As part of a panel entitled “Reaching Broader Audiences,” I’ll be talking about a variety of ways to optimize classroom blogs for search engine visibility.

Some may ask, Why connect your classroom to the world of search? Despite media coverage to the contrary, I will argue (albeit briefly) that blogging can be good for your university, good for your students, and good for your career, so why not take a few steps to maximize your blogging efforts?

Rest assured, this will not be another ho-hum presentation on SEO (search engine optimization). Yes, we will mention the bare-minimum SEO basics, but we will quickly move on to talk about the relevance of tagging communities, Technorati, Google Base, Google Sitemaps, and RSS. We will also touch briefly on the future of blogs and search. In addition, many of the points we cover will apply no matter what the context of the blog–classroom, library, information technology, alumni, marketing, etc.

Brain scans predict cognitive decline in normal people.

Brain scans may detect neurological changes in people who exhibit no outward signs of cognitive decline but who later develop dementia or mental impairment, according to the results of a new study led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.

Humboldt College Comparison of Satisfaction of Moodle and Blackboard.

http://www.humboldt.edu/~jdv1/moodle/all.htm

Thanks to Alan and John Arle for pointing to this presentation by Dr. Kathy D. Munoz and Joan Van Duzer of Humboldt State University which provides some comparative data of a course delivered through both Moodle and Blackboard. Student satisfaction and performance are fairly similar between the two environments, with a slight preference for Moodle, and the real differences seem to come out when the instructor/developer satisfaction is taken into account too. While Blackboard is hailed for the strength of its gradebook, it's built-in survey tool and for seeming easier off the mark to beginners, the presentation then lists a whole host of advantages and satisfactions that emerged over time with Moodle. - SWL
