Scaling the Tufte effect.
Reading Edward Tufte's latest opus, Beautiful
Evidence, I stopped on page 176 to consider his redesign of a
table of data about cancer survival rates, shown (in part) here. As
you can see, it's a stack of sparklines, each decorated with data
labels. In Tufte's
online
forum you can find the original table, the redesign, and an
assortment of PowerPoint manglings of the data.

Apple Unveils Extra Leopard-isms To Developers. devilsecret writes to point out that some of the new Apple capabilities for developers on Leopard have been unveiled. The most interesting parts appear to be the opening of more of iLife to other programs, and the inclusion of Ruby on Rails.

Seagate to Encrypt Data on Hard Drives. Krishna Dagli writes "Seagate, using their new DriveTrust Technology will automatically encrypts every bit of data stored on the hard drive and require users to have a key, or password, before being able to access the disk drive."

USB Dongle Records Web, FM Radio. rah1420 writes "Gizmag just wrote about "Instant FM Music," a USB dongle that plugs into your computer's USB Port and records FM and Web Radio stations. You can record the playlist, tag the songs for easy playback, all without that nasty DRM." Nice and cheap, although who knows if the software is any good. That would be a neat device to see hacked for things like MythTV.
