Gates is sorry...

Government Computer News reports in a short article that Microsoft is taking one month off from coding, as part of its reliability initiative, in order to start fixing bugs:

"Describing the state of computing today as unstable and unreliable, [Microsoft's Richard Purcell] said Microsoft chairman Bill Gates 'is really annoyed by the incredible pain we put everyone through in computing.'" [Macintouch]

How about a multi-billion dollar rebate to everyone? Are you that annoyed, Bill?

Living the alternate lifestyle...

Tired of living in a cave? Looking for a tent to live in? Then, why not try a Yurt?

Yurts originated in Mongolia, part of the nomadic life there. Shelter Systems has a wide variety of modern Yurts for almost any conceivable purpose. Greenhouse, hothouse, house, and outhouse! Okay, maybe a little expensive for a outhouse.

Costs a lot less than a Doublewide!

Please note: You're in the Britney Generation. Is it our memory that's going or Pepsi's? [Salon.com]

Nobody, but nobody respects poor Britney!

A day in the life. Joel Surnow is the man responsible for the thrilling, masochistic television show "24." He has no idea how it's going to end. [Salon.com]

This show is so good, you get angry that you have to wait another week for the next episode. Man!

SuSE expects break-even second quarter. The feat would be a significant milestone for the company: It was profitable for a time, but it now faces heavy competition from Red Hat and established titans such as Microsoft and Sun. [CNET News.com]

Good for them! I like the SuSE distro quite a bit.

I am trying to set up a new server for a client's site. The web hosting company that they want to use is a 'Windows' shop. A web host that's primarily Windows?

They do offer a Linux dedicated server service, if you will, but it is one of those VDS [Virtual Dedicated Server] jobs. It uses a web-based 'control panel' interface with no SSH allowed.

I ask the tech support guy to give me an URL of a demo site so I can see if I will be able to work under these restrictions. He does, and as I attempt to log on to the service, he has to get off the phone, 'cause the blasted web interface is taking too long to load!

Hours later and I still can't get it to work! Yeah, they make these web interfaces for security reasons...not to hide the fact that you're on the same box as 1,000 other sites. If only the database the site requires didn't need to process so much data, I'd be willing to give this thing a try--hey, the client is always right.

As it is, I'll speak with the tech support guy again tommorrow, and see if it can be made to work.

A special shout-out to my buddy Todd! May his change in living arrangements bring happiness to Sara and him!

That MOBO was fine, it turns out it was the Athalon that was bad.

The guys at Accubyte.com will double check my MOBO with the new Athalon chip prior to sending it back to me.

So, if there had been no problem with the chip or MOBO, I would have saved lots of money [$167 for a DDR MOBO w/ Athalon 1.13ghz & heatsink], but that wasn't the case, so as for my saving money, well, not so much.

It cost $11.50 to send the board back to Accubyte.com via FedEx, another $20 to have them ship it back, and $35 (or so) for the 1 year warranty [a good idea given that the 15 day warranty that comes with the MOBO ends before they even send it back to me]. Cool!
