Apple, Sun and Ericsson Agree on Streaming Media. Apple Computer, Sun Microsystems and Ericsson said that they jointly would support a new format for next-generation Internet streaming media. [The New York Times: Technology]

MPEG-4. But the licensing issues...see below.

Let the anti-drug ads continue. Most liberals hate those spots linking drug use to terrorism. But as a former drug abuser, I think exposing the seamy drug-trafficking underworld is a fair way to make kids think twice. [Salon.com]

As a former drug user myself, I'll say this: there is nothing wrong with recreational drug use. We're all adults. You want to drink 'till you're drunk, fine. You want to smoke cigarettes until you lie in a hospital bed under a oxygen tent, fine. Just don't blame someone else. Take responsibility for your own actions.

If the war on drugs in this country was real, then you would have very, very stiff penalties for DUI. I personally think several years in prison with no possibility of parole, is a good start. DUI is the ONLY reason to care if someone is taking drugs. If they endanger the world at large. Otherwise, prohibition does not work. People like to relax, or go nuts, or whatever.

And kids....kids aren't going to stop taking drugs if they have already started 'cause of terrorism. They are smart enough to know that there are plenty of politicians, police, etc. making money off the drug trade as well.

That said....See below.

Hardcore addicts shown to cause 99% of drugs bill. UK latest: Drug abuse in England and Wales costs society up to £18.8bn a year with hardcore heroin and cocaine addicts responsible for 99% of the bill. [Guardian Unlimited]

This makes sense. Most people will get sick of drug use when it begins to interfere with their lives. With some help, and time, they will succeed. But there will be a small number that either do not want to stop taking drugs, or can't seem to be able to do so.

I know plenty of people who are able to integrate recreational drug use into their lives without ruining either their lives, their jobs or the lives of their loved ones. They can drink, smoke, snort when they feel the need, and not when they don't, or its inappropriate.

Remember, paying to help people who want to stop taking drugs stop, and allowing people who want to take them to do so without resorting to underground means of obtaining them is less expensive than trying to keep drugs out of society.

Net radio gives Alanis her own station. Radio Free Virgin teams with Alanis Morissette to launch a channel featuring songs by the musician, including tracks from her new album, "Under Rug Swept." [CNET News.com]

This is one way to get people to listen to it. Her last studio recording didn't fare that well.

Apple spurns proposed MPEG-4 licenses. The company rejects proposed licensing terms for the emerging MPEG-4 video standard, leaving the future of its QuickTime multimedia technology in limbo. [CNET News.com]

Here Apple is fighting the good fight: against per minute streaming fees.

Lyle Kantrovich: False prophets of Usability. Unfortunately NetConversions isn't the only company doing things along this line, and even many usability professionals can fall into the trap of promising to solve all of a customer's problems in one fell swoop. Usability (as a field) suffers when "experts" don't meet expectations. [Tomalak's Realm]

Yes, I find that a lot of usability critics are way out of line. Especially when discussing MacOS X and MacOS.
