A city slicker moves to the bush

The Kwong Sings Emporium closes on Saturday AfternoonPersonal Space - I was walking through town with my son Ben, exploring the three streets that make up the central business district of Casino - looking for a hardware shop, when we discovered an arcade. It was called "Kwong Sing." It was dark and dingey. Yet there were seven or eight businesses trading there "Kwong Sings Menswear", ""Kwong Koo Sings" etc... Very, very strange.

We were doing our usual fast paced stride, moving quickly, glancing at the shop windows, realising that we were not where we wanted to be when we noticed a group of three older people clustered at the end of the arcade in the centre of the walkway - talking.

Ben and I continued to stride past, avoiding eye contact - a city protectionist measure. One of the ladies was desperately looking to make eye contact and seemed quite offended when we wouldn't connect. As we walked past she lurched backwards exclaiming "Excuse me!" as though we had physically pushed her when all we had done was to pass within 1 metre of her without acknowledging her presence.
