The 10 most significant predictions, selected from roughly 300 predictions made in
Gartner’s Focus Areas of IT research, highlight trends and changes that will have the greatest effect on the IT industry in 2003 and beyond. 2002 was a difficult year for most of the IT industry, with the global economic slowdown affecting providers and users of IT goods and services. The effects in 2003 will be increased volatility for vendors and stress for IT workers, disappointments in certain market initiatives, and a further shift of control from the IS organization to business departments.

News.Com, 1/2/03: Microsoft counts on antipiracy technique

Microsoft is set to release its first mainstream consumer software application protected by product activation, in what could be a first step toward expanding use of the antipiracy technology.
On Tuesday, Microsoft plans to officially launch Plus Digital Media Edition (DME), a $19.95 add-on pack for Windows XP. Microsoft has offered various versions of Plus since the release of Windows 95. But unlike earlier versions, Plus DME is protected by product activation, meaning that consumers will have to enter a 25-key code to install the software and then "activate" Plus DME over the Internet.
