ZDNet, 7/10/03: Microsoft: IT does matter

A recent article in the Harvard Business Review stirred unusual interest within the senior ranks of the computer industry by contending that the broad availability of information technology has dulled IT's effectiveness as a competitive weapon.
Since then the piece, "IT Doesn't Matter," has been endlessly dissected--as much as for what it suggested as for what it reported. Indeed, if the central thesis of the article proves true, the implications for an IT industry struggling to recover from nearly three fallow years are grave.
Like most tech companies, Microsoft has more than an academic interest in how all this turns out. The company, which has sold billions of dollars of software over the years, would suffer the effects of yet another slowdown in customer buying.

The vulnerability affects all supported versions of the operating system

Microsoft Corp. warned of a critical security flaw today that affects all supported versions of its Windows operating system and could enable a remote attacker to run malicious code on unpatched Windows systems.
The security hole is due to a buffer-overrun vulnerability in the Windows HTML converter, a component that enables Windows to convert files from Rich Text Format (RTF) to HTML, which is used to display documents on the Web.

Computerworld, 7/9/03: AT&T, MCI offer Wi-Fi access to enterprise VPN customers
Both companies are partnering with Wayport to offer service

AT&T Corp. and WorldCom Inc. have both added Wi-Fi access to their enterprise-class, remote-access virtual private network (VPN) services, capitalizing on a boom in Wi-Fi public-access networks worldwide.
AT&T announced today that it would offer wireless access to its enterprise clients who use its VPN service at more than 2,000 Wi-Fi locations in 20 countries in the fourth quarter. AT&T has partnered with GRIC Communications Inc., a Milpitas, Calif.-based provider of global remote access services, to offer the service.
