CSO, musicians take more time to reach deal
Last week, the musicians union advised members to clean out their lockers in anticipation of a strike. CSO contracts are typically worked out in marathon, 11th-hour sessions, and the orchestra musicians' most recent strike was in 1991. CSO musicians currently earn a base salary of $104,000 a year and pride themselves on setting the pace for salaries among American orchestras. Struggling to reduce an accumulated operating deficit of $11.1 million, CSO management wants to keep expenses down.

Is Mac OS the most secure? | News.blog | CNET News.com
In a study bound to rile Linux advocates, a British security company has found that attacks on Linux machines are more than twice as common as those on Windows systems.
London-based Mi2g found that computers using Mac OS X and other BSD Unix software were more secure. The study said that over a 12-month period, Linux machines suffered roughly two-thirds of security breaches, Windows systems represented just over one-quarter of attacks, and Mac OS X/BSD Unix computers accounted for just 5 percent.
The company conducting the study highlighted Apple Computer's performance, offering a glowing endorsement of the Mac.

Sickening Feeling
Watching the results from the U.S. election last night, I got more and more depressed as the evening wore on. While the final tally still isn't in, it doesn't look good for Kerry. God help us all.

Looks like middle USA has beaten the rest of the world
Sad? Wondering about your own echo chamber? I am. I was 90% certain that Bush wouldn't win, that it wouldn't be as close as the polls predicted.
Listening on the internet, reading my usual sites, I figured that Kerry would pull it off.
Now, I'm realising that I've been reading people like me.
Perhaps, most people are like me, that is, most of the rest of the world. We seemed to want Kerry over Bush. Yet, the middle, the heart of America decided to stick with it's war President, it's Christian, god fearing lunatic.

Depressing
I must admit that the results we are seeing do look totally unbelivable from this side of the Atlantic. Akma: If the Democratic Party can't win in a year when the incumbent
President is administering an unpopular, unsuccessful foreign war, when
a blockbuster semi-documentary made millions of dollars exposing that
President's short-comings, when the economy is uncertain, when the Red
Sox won the World Series -- under what circumstances can it win?
Yet, look at these numbers: apparently a significant majority of US citizen are happy with this administration, more than in year 2000.
Maybe this is amazing because of the reality distortion field in which
we live in the blogosphere. Suddenly we realize that most of the voices
we hear are actually coming from a minority while a silent
majority is choosing again a world leader who has already started cruel
wars based only on lies, a majority totally unaware of what's going on
in the rest of the world and and scared to death.
It's very, very depressing.
