of no interest to anyone
This is probably of no interest to anyone other those who find this via Google, but the dvd surround sound side of Dualdisc version of Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better does not work in the Acura TL. In fact, all Sony Dualdiscs will not work in the Acura TL because they are not DVD-Audio. Sony makes SACD, which competes with DVD-A, so for Dualdiscs Sony chose to put only DVD-Video. So even though it says Dualdisc, and the back says "DVD side includes enhanced surround sound", it's not DVD-A, it's a surround sound version of the album in a video format that plays on the computer, which is bullshit.
I know most Dualdiscs are meant to be played on the computer or dvd player and not in DVD-A players, but still, way to fuck over the branding of Dualdisc by making some that work and some that don't. Those that buy CDs and are geeky enough to have DVD-A capability in their cars are usually the people that tell other people "buy this". Lesson learned, Dualdisc doesn't necessarily mean DVD-A, which I thought it did since all previous Dualdiscs I bought (NIN) are DVD-A and work in the TL.

A simple way to prevent PowerBook fan activation
I've just starting using the online version of Rosetta Stone's language learning software. One of the features I like is the pronunciation practice, where you listen to a phrase pronounced by a native speaker, you try to say ...

RippleCast Vodcasts for the iPod
With the growing amount of iPod formatted video hitting the net, Ripple Training has decided to throw their hat into the ring with their RippleCast tutorials. The RippleCasts are short video based tutorials that can be loaded directly onto an iPod or simply played through iTunes. So far three tutorials have been released including tutorials on converting video for playback on the iPod and a guide to watermarking a project in Final Cut. I checked out the tutorials and found them helpful and easy to follow and quickly subscribed to the RippleCast feed. Definitely worth a download and best of all they are completely free.

BBC's New Annotatable Audio Project
BBC continues to be on the cutting edge of technology. It always surprises me for an organization that is so huge how fast they are to understand what is going on the ground. Tags are becoming element in how the internet becomes useable to the masses. Flickr is a site that has ridden on tags to their success. Now BBC is trying to do that with audio, "under the Annotatable Audio project, radio listeners would be able to mark and add descriptive keywords to segments of programming they want to flag for bookmarking or sharing with others. It means they could highlight a specific item within a lengthy bulletin stream and return to that particular point later." And also this-"We decided to look towards the possibilities of user-created annotation and metadata... that might allow the collective articulation of what a programme or speech or piece of music was about and how it could be divided up and described." Man, this is important, video and audio still hard to find online, this would be a wonderful way to solve that problem.
