No XP on Intel Macs, but Vista is good to go — If you've been counting on being able to run Windows on those new Intel-based Macs, Apple's not about tomake it easy for you — at least not if you're attached to Windows XP. According to Apple SVP Phil Schiller, the newMacs announced yesterday …

Transmit 2 Hour Movie in 0.5 Seconds
Japan's Kansai Electric Power Co said it has developed technology that allows the transmission of a two-hour movie in 0.5 seconds. The high speed is achieved using fibre-optic cables on power-transmitting steel towers. The transmission speed of one terabit per second is more than 100 times faster than inter-city data transmissions currently in use, a company spokesman said. Kansai has not decide when it will put the technology to commercial use, though it was possible it could be in 2010 or later.

Globetechnology: Jukeboxes, DJs being pushed out by iPods
Multimedia artists will be an integral part of the research centre and will explore new art forms made possible by high-speed networking.

For example, at the building dedication later this month, Adriene Jenik, an associate professor of computer and media arts at the University of California, San Diego, will preview Specflic 2.0, what she describes as an example of "speculative distributed cinema." This next-generation style movie will appear on a cluster of networked displays in the courtyard of the new building. Each display will be a window into a different part of the narrative, which will be taking place with both live and filmed actors.

"The story isn't just told, it's experienced," she said.

DV Breakdown
If DV is a mystery codec for you, head over to DV Collections for a complex answer to the question: "What is DV?" The article covers DV color space, the difference between DV and DV50, as well as a general breakdown of the compression methods used. It's a great read if you're looking for some general information on how the data inside your tapes work, and you might even grab some useful info on how to get around aliased keys.

Virgin Digital Radio expanding to TV
It seems counter intuitive, to listen to radio through your television, but it's getting an increasingly popular trend. As a result, Virgin Radio will be extending its two digital radio stations, Virgin Radio Classic Rock and Xtreme, onto the UK's Telewest digital TV platform. The move will boost their reach by an additional 1.2 million subscribers.

Expect to see Virgin Radio Classic Rock on channel 950, and Xtreme on channel 951. The first Rajar figures will be posted in February.

Nikon to focus on digital
Nikon UK has made an interesting announcement titled 'Nikon prepares to strengthen digital line-up for 2006' that signals the beginning of the end of nearly 60 years of Nikon fllm cameras. Nikon Corp has made the decision to 'focus management resources' on digital cameras in place of film cameras, and is discontinuing most film camera bodies, manual focus lenses and accessories and all large format and enlarging lenses.
