More on High-Def DVD Boycott
Was reading some of
the comments on the HD Boycott post by Mike
Evangelist when I noticed Philip Hodgetts also weighing
in the discussion. BTW for you newbies, Phil Hodgetts is one of the original and greatest Digital Video gurus,
unlike say me. Here is what he had to say about the next generation High-Def DVD's: "All Blu-ray and HD DVD
players will require an Internet connection to play connected content - every time you play.
Further should someone - say a friend of your teenage child - ever put an unauthorized disc in your
player/drive it will be deactivated remotely and require a trip to a repair shop to be 'reauthorized'.
Seriously, I am not making this up."

Call for HD Boycott
Found this somewhat shocking story at MacNN: "Apple's former director of video
product marketing Mike Evangelist is calling for a boycott of next-generation HD video products--including HD-DVD and
Blu-ray--claiming that the industry is trying to take away 'fair use' from customers." Reading the actual blog post, my blood started to boil, "This is important. I
really want you to understand what’s going on with the video industry’s push towards HD. They are
engineering a complete removal of the concept of fair use. They are setting up systems that will completely
control how, when and where you can use content that you buy. Even worse, they can retroactively
change the rules!"

Apple today introduced a new Mac mini and an updated version of of Front Row. A 6-button remote control let's you access audio, photos and video on all computers on your local network (iTunes only on Windows machines).
The Mac mini includes one audio output connector which can be used as a stereo analogue output or an S/PDIF output. While early coverage of the presentation sometimes referred to this as a Dolby Digital output one assumes it could also output a DTS stream.
On the video side of things the Mac mini has a DVI/VGA output. Canadian prices for the two configurations are $699 and $949. Specifications.
