The Intel Mini
Everyone's crazy about how the Mac mini is the center of your home entertainment center, but I've gone further and made it the center of my home's network. My mini runs OS X Server and provides Mobile Homes to my other Macs. There will be no data lost in this house. It stores my music, movies encoded from DVD for instant access, and is connected to my TV as well as having VLC set to multicast stream video-on-demand to other machines in the house. It does it all.

The Hidden Life of Drag and Drop
Many people are initially thrown off DnD by the fact that dragging text in Mac OS X is substantially more difficult that doing the same in Mac OS 9 because the method changed and few learned the difference. I'll tell you the secret, and it's very simple: hold the mouse down. Select the text and click anywhere in the selection then keep the click for about two seconds before moving. Now it moves. And now we're going to have fun.

Just posted! PMA 2006 Final Show Report
PMA 2006: We've just posted the final version of our PMA 2006 Show Report. The show report covers 19 stands with over 230 images and 2,880 words (all produced and posted live from the show floor). In the five days of the show we received over 3.8 million visitors who read 14.6 million pages. We've also compiled our top ten new products (a few of which will probably come as no surprise). Overall we found this PMA to be a busy show with plenty of interesting news and a much more positive vibe in 'backroom' meetings. It was a noticeable step up from last year and bodes well for the year ahead and Photokina in September.

iPhoto 6: Good, but Not Ground-Breaking
Let's look at some of the slick new features in iPhoto 6, which fall into two main categories: editing and sharing capabilities.

Coming Back Full Circle to Film and Paper

Much of the hallway talk around PMA has drifted to archiving, the permanence of prints from today's home printers, and what shape our images will be in 100 years from now. The growing distrust of optical media's archival ability combined with its lack of storage capacity for today's huge files has people wondering, "what should I use?"

Hard drives seem OK for temporary storage, as long as there's plenty of redundancy. But are they really practical over decades? Suddenly photographers are thinking about archiving to paper and film again -- printing on stable stock with long lasting dyes and migrating their most cherished digital images to back to film. When stored properly, this return to paper and celluloid makes a certain amount of sense... I think. Or does it?

An issue which has to be dealt with by any medium which has made the transition from analogue to digital.

Editors' Notes: PMA Notebook: Color for the rest of us
For people who are getting their feet wet with color issues and who aren’t willing to invest in a more full-featured calibrator, Huey may be just what they need to finally hop on the color-calibration bandwagon.

A script to convert an iWeb site into a template
I created this Python script to automatically convert a site in iWeb into a template, and install it in the iWeb application. The following description is taken from the comments at the top of the script:

Cool. I'd read earlier that building templates for iWeb was extremely complicated.

Toronto Wins Bid for Third Apple Store
The demographics must be overwhelming, since Toronto will receive its third retail store later this year at the Sherway Gardens mall on the city’s west side. The store will be about 10 miles equidistant fromt the existing Yorkdale and future Eaton Centre stores, and is a half-mile from Lake Ontario. The mall is operated by Cadillac-Fairview, the same company who has Le Carrefour Leval, the future home to a Montreal Apple store, and the Pacific Centre in Vancouver, a much-speculated location for a future store.
