Freaky! What's up with those crazy folks? Looks like the Star has a scoop here. I don't see anything at cbc's site.

CNN.com - Canada to dispatch 900 troops to Afghanistan - January 5, 2002 The deal for a Canadian contribution was reportedly reached with American military officials at the U.S. southern military command headquarters in Tampa, Fla.

Clearly there was political pressure from high up in Ottawa to make something happen. It's quite ridiculous because as the article points out, the "problem" of a lack of Canuck input is all one of perception. Instead of pointing out the obvious we just put more Canadians "in harms way".
