The Register: Canada mulls blank CDR, MP3 player tax: "But hang on a mo - approx. 100m blank CDs are sold a year, of which 44million a year are used in home-ripping, according to the Canadian Private Copying Collective's own figures, the Globe And Mail notes. So why should the levy be applied on all CDs, the majority of which is used in IT? No, we can't work that one out, either.
And what about the pirates who store stolen movies on CD. Shouldn't the movie industry get a slice of the pie?
" What a mess. The article includes info about a petition against the move and other contact info.

Gramophone - Universal SACD/DVD-A player now on sale 'Many audio enthusiasts remain confused as to whether they should buy a Super Audio CD player, a DVD-A-capable DVD player or just stick to CD, but Pioneer thinks it has a solution in the form of its DV-747A player, which has just gone on sale.'Yup. If you can afford it you can have it all. Of course if DVD had fulfilled it's initial promise we wouldn't be in this mess and we'd all have inexpensive players which would play any DVD. Sigh.

Canadians want fewer immigrants, poll says. Toronto Star Online Mar 18 2002 6:03AM ET [Moreover - moreover...] Ugh. Let's hope this is a post 11 Sept reaction. The poll was done before the release of the census that made it clear we have to encourage immigration. My family were immigrants once, even if they came (via the US) from England in the early 1600's.

Thestar.com/Nixon loathed Trudeau and Ottawa: "Five hundred hours of audio tapes secretly recorded by the disgraced former president and made public by the U.S. National Archives make it clear that Nixon's sulphurous loathing for Trudeau extended to the former prime minister's staff, and even to Canada." Too funny. Nixon would have been in completely over his head with Trudeau.

All comers welcome in Canada. Guardian Unlimited Mar 18 2002 7:56AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]Our population as a whole would be declining if not for immigrants. So we need more. But most of them go to the main urban centres where population is growing. The entire country gets just under a quarter million a year and half of them come to Toronto.

Thestar.com/Setting his life to music took time: "From a world of music, Christos Hatzis chose Canada.
From Canada, the Greek-born composer has reaped a world of acclaim.
"I found much more breathing room here," said Hatzis, 49, an associate professor of music at the University of Toronto.
"For an artist, I found Canada had a more nurturing attitude for young talent." Congratulations to Chirstos on his New Pioneer Award.
