I don't get mountains, but I get Steve Earle < 12:13:25 AM>.
[GAM-Arts] 'This here is what you do with your money, he says about the Banff Centre, and we take ours and blow the hell out of Iraq.
Earle is right about the Banff Centre, it's a pretty decent way to spend government money. This place is nothing short of magnificent. Since I've been here, a little over two weeks, there have been concerts, readings and art shows every day: Steve Earle, Annie Proulx, Fred Stenson, Lorne Elliot. Classical pianists practise all day and the music spills out into the parking lots, kilns are firing, you can take a Janet Cardiff tour through the forest, or lie on your back in the giant pool and watch your reflection in the glass ceiling, floating amid the stars.
The Banff Centre is a great big jewel somehow left intact after the dismantling of the welfare state. It's the only arts centre of its kind in Canada, bringing together, as it does, artists of all disciplines and nationalities. Artists are treated as if they matter. It's partly subsidized by visiting business conferences and something called "mountain culture." A magic place.
