The article says about 150 jetliners were diverted to Atlantic Canada. In Gander, Nfld. 6,000 passengers arrived in a town of 10,500. < 12:01:05 PM >CBC News: Stranded stars sing for relief effort Some of Canada's biggest country music stars, stranded in Calgary after all flights were cancelled, turned their predicament into an opportunity on Wednesday night by putting on a concert and raising money. The stars were in town for the Canadian Country Music Awards on Monday night, and were stuck on Tuesday morning. By Wednesday night, two dozen of them had agreed to put on a concert to benefit the aid efforts in the United States. With only a few hours' notice, about 3,000 people showed up, and donated thousands of dollars for the Red Cross. Very cool. But any glimmer of recognition of why people might have been driven to carry out such atrocities, sacrificing their own lives in the process - or why the United States is hated with such bitterness, not only in Arab and Muslim countries, but across the developing world - seems almost entirely absent. An important point. No one's condoning any of this of course but at some point we'll have to look at the source of the problem. |
