| Reckless Administration May Reap Disastrous Consequences: |
'This nation is about to embark upon the first test of a revolutionary doctrine applied in an extraordinary way at an unfortunate time. The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. And it is being tested at a time of world-wide terrorism, making many countries around the globe wonder if they will soon be on our -- or some other nation's -- hit list.' -U.S. Senator Robert Byrd, Feb. 12, 2003

'It was bad enough for the U.S. to have endured the intelligence failures that led to Sept. 11; it's another thing to know that 18 months, billions of dollars and untold numbers of bombs later that Osama bin Laden and most of his top advisers remain on the loose. This failure ought to be thrown daily in Mr. Bush's face, but he has diverted attention to Iraq, where the United States is about to make a mistake of historic proportions.' -Jeffrey Simpson in The Globe and Mail, 18 Feb 2003

Mark Twain: "Statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception." CPO Without Contract Musicians with the Calgary Philharmonic are going ahead with a recording session for a new compact disc, even though they're still without a contract.
I didn't know about this until I was out there. The orchestra was very professional during the sessions. Hell, they were just a great bunch of people. They aren't the least bit militant at all. But it's hard for them to swallow what is in effect a 12% cutback in one chunk. The night after the attack in the US they gave away tickets for a concert they put on.

CBC News - Viewpoint by Judy Rebick
It is understandable that 85 per cent of Americans support George Bush's call for a "war against terrorism." Their country has been attacked, thousands of their people killed. There is no more justifiable reason for war than self-defence. The problem is that this enemy was born and bred in war. Only peaceful solutions can defeat it.

Arts "I don't know," said Steinmetz, when I asked how they made such perfect choices. "We were just going by our gut. It was coming from the soul."
Gut. Soul. Of all the things people had said during those first awful days -- of all the words I had heard spoken -- it was Steinmetz's comment that most shook me. I realized that the musical choices that he and his colleagues had made that morning were based on knowledge, but not only on knowledge. No computer could have done what they did; there was no archive more useful than their own memory and experience. They made their selections with intelligence and passion, with craft and intuition, with a yearning for beauty and a desire to express sorrow -- a combination of skills and characteristics and needs that they share with the composers and musicians of the works they played and that comprise the condition of being alive and being human. With the disappearance of these irreplaceable qualities, the enormity of even one death can be staggering.
Congratulations Mark, Kelly, and Tom.

THE WHITE HOUSE:FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER A disturbed man's crash on the South Lawn exposes the White House's vulnerability "For years I have thought a terrorist suicide pilot could readily divert his flight from an approach to Washington to blow up the White House," said Richard Helms, CIA director from 1966 to 1972. "It has been said that the Secret Service is primed for just such a venture. Perhaps so, but the episode this week

BTW, speaking of apologies, it seems the US government must have something to say to the families of the people who died on Tuesday. After alll the money we spend on defense, there was apparently no plan to protect the air space of NY and DC. This amazes me. In 1994 a private pilot crashed his plane into the White House. Hello. Anyone home at DoD? I hope it's not necessary to ask if there are defenses for our cities now. [Scripting News]
