Reckless Administration May Reap Disastrous Consequences:
'This nation is about to embark upon the first test of a revolutionary doctrine applied in an extraordinary way at an unfortunate time. The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. And it is being tested at a time of world-wide terrorism, making many countries around the globe wonder if they will soon be on our -- or some other nation's -- hit list.'
-U.S. Senator Robert Byrd, Feb. 12, 2003
On the road to losing the peace :
'It was bad enough for the U.S. to have endured the intelligence failures that led to Sept. 11; it's another thing to know that 18 months, billions of dollars and untold numbers of bombs later that Osama bin Laden and most of his top advisers remain on the loose. This failure ought to be thrown daily in Mr. Bush's face, but he has diverted attention to Iraq, where the United States is about to make a mistake of historic proportions.'
-Jeffrey Simpson in The Globe and Mail, 18 Feb 2003

They Both Reached for the Gun
For history's sake, the press conference scene in "Chicago" should be paired on the DVD with George W. Bush's press conference of March 6, 2003. [New York Times: Arts] 'The former Andover cheerleader had failed to convince America's friends to come aboard. The economy was tanking. But the journalists at hand were so limply deferential to the president's boilerplate script that the subsequent, good-natured "Saturday Night Live" parody couldn't match the gallows humor of the actual event.'

It's all about assuming your audience can't think for itself and can be led by the nose. Wake up America.

Tornado deaths raise friendly ire
The death of two British airmen whose fighter jet was shot down by a US Patriot missile has caused anger and bewilderment among their comrades. [Guardian Unlimited] 'RAF chiefs are at a loss to understand how the battery, with its own radar system, failed to recognise a coalition aircraft coming in to land at its home base. Each jet emits its own individual signature to prevent friendly fire. Officially there have been no words of reproach from Britain over the failure in communication that led to the tragedy, but behind the scenes there is outrage and demands for an explanation.'
Absolutely no excuse. More cowboys.

I'm glued to the TV and when I'm not doing that I'm glued to NPR. It's not a nice day. Very soon we're all going to have to decide if it's ethical or moral to view TV pictures of American prisoners of war, or Americans who likely were executed by the Iraqis as prisoners of war. Up until today the war hasn't effected my body chemistry, despite the awful news, I've been feeling pretty good. Today it hit me. [Scripting News]
Why doesn't the idea of people being killed matter until it's Americans who are dying?

Nick Denton: "The inhabitants of Bucharest were so crushed by decades of harsh dictatorship, that they emerged suspicious of each other, credulous of rumor, disorientated by the truth, seething with recrimination, and bitter, bitter, bitter." [Scripting News]
It's a hell of a situation in which to enforce a democracy.

"TV's War News Coverage Outdrawn by Comedy Repeats" [Daypop Top 40] 'U.S. television networks, facing a bill of up to $20 million each per day to cover the Iraq war, found that "Friends" are more popular than enemies as a repeat episode of the top sitcom on Thursday night beat live war cover on ABC in the ratings.'
Amusing ourselves to death?

Kucinich Forces Administration To Disclose Iraq Document to Congress

"This is a small step forward in obtaining information that the Administration has deliberately withheld from the public and the Congress," stated Kucinich. "This Administration has marched the nation, and the world, to the verge of war without revealing any evidence to this Congress or the American people to back up its war rhetoric. I will continue to oppose this unjustified war, and continue my efforts to ensure that this Administration reveals evidence, to the public, it may have before its sends the young men and women of the Armed Force into battle. I believe Congress, and the American people, deserve nothing less." (link)

Ha! At least somebody in Congress has got some backbone.

Media and the War
Living in the United States and not having a satellite dish, I'm limited to watching television news that is broadcast from this country. I read a lot of foreign press on the Internet, though. Below are some of my observations on how the war is being covered so far from my vantage point in America. If all goes well, you'll chime in (especially those not in the U.S.) and share your thoughts on how the war is being covered in your part of the world. [Kuro5hin.org]

The Globe and Mail: A Nova Scotia mother watches her son fight in Iraq 'He is one of Canada's unrecognized soldiers -- a group of more than a dozen natives from Canada who are part of the United States invasion force that is now rolling into Iraq. As many as eight of the U.S. soldiers are Mi'kmaq men from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick who joined the U.S. Marine Corps following a U.S. military recruiting drive about five years ago.'

The Globe and Mail: Case against U.S. pilots too weak, report says "In passing judgment on the U.S. pilots charged with the manslaughter deaths of four Canadian soldiers, Colonel Patrick Rosenow concluded that the expert testimony of fellow fighter pilots would scuttle any chance of a criminal conviction."
This is complete BS

We Begin Combing in Five Minutes! Unauthorized Entry - The Bush Doctrine: War without anyone's permission. By Michael Kinsley 'But George W. Bush defied embarrassment and slew it with a series of Orwellian flourishes. If the United Nations wants to be "relevant," he said, it must do exactly as I say. In other words, in order to be relevant, it must become irrelevant. When that didn't work, he said: I am ignoring the wishes of the Security Council and violating the U.N. Charter in order to enforce a U.N. Security Council resolution. No, no, don't thank me! My pleasure!!'

Bush is an idiot, but he was right about Saddam [Salon] 'The argument put forward by Berman, who is one of the most elegant and provocative thinkers to emerge from America's New Left, will both infuriate and engage those on all sides of the political spectrum. In a recent interview with Salon, Berman insisted that while he does not support the Bush administration -- actually, he detests how President Bush has handled the case for war and warns "we will pay for it" -- he thinks it was also dangerous for the antiwar movement to ignore the threat that was posed by a ruthless Iraqi regime that killed a million people and threatened the stability of the world.'

Al-Muhajabah's Islamic Blogs: Today I Weep for My Country, by Sen. Robert Byrd 'What is happening to this country? When did we become a nation which ignores and berates our friends? When did we decide to risk undermining international order by adopting a radical and doctrinaire approach to using our awesome military might? How can we abandon diplomatic efforts when the turmoil in the world cries out for diplomacy?'
