'This nation is about to embark upon the first test of a revolutionary doctrine applied in an extraordinary way at an unfortunate time. The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. CBC News: 'I wanted their wings,' Canadian mother says ' Leger said she wanted the Pentagon to learn a lesson from the tragedy and try to prevent more "friendly fire" deaths. But based on similar mistakes in the war in Iraq, it's obvious the U.S. hasn't made life any safer for coalition troops, she said.
In the absence of a court martial, some of the Canadian families are considering launching a civil lawsuit. They've hired a lawyer to look into possible legal action. '

Court-Martial Urged for Sergeant Accused of Killing Comrades
If convicted, Sgt. Hasan K. Akbar, who is accused of attacking officers sleeping in their tents in Kuwait, could face the death penalty. [New York Times: NYT HomePage] Too bad he didn't just drop a bomb on them from a jet. He might have been let off with a a slap on the wrist.
