Reckless Administration May Reap Disastrous Consequences:
'This nation is about to embark upon the first test of a revolutionary doctrine applied in an extraordinary way at an unfortunate time. The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. And it is being tested at a time of world-wide terrorism, making many countries around the globe wonder if they will soon be on our -- or some other nation's -- hit list.'
-U.S. Senator Robert Byrd, Feb. 12, 2003
On the road to losing the peace :
'It was bad enough for the U.S. to have endured the intelligence failures that led to Sept. 11; it's another thing to know that 18 months, billions of dollars and untold numbers of bombs later that Osama bin Laden and most of his top advisers remain on the loose. This failure ought to be thrown daily in Mr. Bush's face, but he has diverted attention to Iraq, where the United States is about to make a mistake of historic proportions.'
-Jeffrey Simpson in The Globe and Mail, 18 Feb 2003

All about what?

It's all about oil. It's not all about oil. We've all seen the charges and the counter-charges. "No Blood For Oil!" various activist groups chanted. "Sacrifice our SUVs, not our children!" they entreated. "Nonsense," others retorted, asserting that it couldn't possibly be all about oil "because the numbers don't work". The sad fact is that the numbers don't have to work... for everyone. The time horizons that many of these analyses use are misleading as well. What if the war isn't just about oil, but rather has come about as a complex confluence of interests, oil being a key but non-singular player, that benefit a subset of the American population to the detriment of the public good? Missiles for the Taking: Abandoned Weapons Litter Iraq

There is a very nice 15-foot-long missile, in mint condition, there for the taking, at an armament factory in Iraq. [New York Times: NYT HomePage] 'The missile, along with a dozen ready-to-fire 107-millimeter antitank rounds, just a few feet away, is part of a problem that the American military has only begun to grapple with: as much as one million tons of ammunition is scattered around Iraq, much of it unguarded — like the armaments at this site here — simply because the United States does not have the manpower to keep watch.'

US is 'battling Satan' says general

A US general sparks furore by saying the war on terror is a battle with Satan and a Muslim fighter worshipped an "idol". [BBC News | World | UK Edition] 'US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has declined to criticise a senior army officer who told audiences the war on terrorism is a battle with Satan.'

How Bush could save his presidency -- and why he won't

The president needs to apologize for Iraq -- but he's constitutionally incapable of admitting he was wrong.
