NYT Endorses Kerry for President:
"There is no denying that this race is mainly about Mr. Bush's disastrous tenure. Nearly four years ago, after the Supreme Court awarded him the presidency, Mr. Bush came into office amid popular expectation that he would acknowledge his lack of a mandate by sticking close to the center. Instead, he turned the government over to the radical right." "We look back on the past four years with hearts nearly breaking, both for the lives unnecessarily lost and for the opportunities so casually wasted. Time and again, history invited George W. Bush to play a heroic role, and time and again he chose the wrong course. We believe that with John Kerry as president, the nation will do better." -- New York Times 17 Oct, 2004
Reckless Administration May Reap Disastrous Consequences:
'This nation is about to embark upon the first test of a revolutionary doctrine applied in an extraordinary way at an unfortunate time. The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. And it is being tested at a time of world-wide terrorism, making many countries around the globe wonder if they will soon be on our -- or some other nation's -- hit list.'
-U.S. Senator Robert Byrd, Feb. 12, 2003
On the road to losing the peace :
'It was bad enough for the U.S. to have endured the intelligence failures that led to Sept. 11; it's another thing to know that 18 months, billions of dollars and untold numbers of bombs later that Osama bin Laden and most of his top advisers remain on the loose. This failure ought to be thrown daily in Mr. Bush's face, but he has diverted attention to Iraq, where the United States is about to make a mistake of historic proportions.'
-Jeffrey Simpson in The Globe and Mail, 18 Feb 2003

Rocking the vote < 8:37:34 PM>. .

'If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are,' says Alice Cooper. His fellow entertainers, however, beg to differ. Singers up and down the country have been urging young people to get out there and vote. Here's a little of what they've had to say.

Final push on day of reckoning < 8:29:00 PM>. .

Jonathan Freedland: President displays 'total Zen attitude' despite poll qualms.
[Via Guardian Unlimited World Latest]
'Confidence was certainly the explicit theme of the president's words, but also his body language. He seemed relaxed; laughing and back-slapping as he landed in Ohio. His campaign mastermind, Karl Rove, was just behind him, wearing an anorak - and a smile. Aides said Mr Bush was not just putting on a show for the cameras. "He has a total Zen attitude about it," said Mark McKinnon, the president's chief media strategist.
The Bush team also said they drew some comfort from the final batch of polls. "Ultimately, you can argue the numbers either way, but my acid test, at the end of the day, is I'd rather be us than them going into the final 24 hours," Mr McKinnon told the New York Times.
But there was none of the cockiness that previous winning campaigns have exuded on election day. Those on board the Bush plane reported a subdued mood, with key players on edge. "Everybody's nervous," conceded Mr McKinnon.
Republican anxiety centred on the president's failure to achieve any last-minute surge in the polls. Mr Rove was said to have hoped to create a "bandwagon effect" that would make the incumbent unstoppable, but that did not come.'

Cory Doctorow: Eminem's poltical song "Mosh" has a get-out-the-vote video that's licensed for free Internet distribution, and is being distributed by Brewster Kahle at the Internet Archive as well as many other places. Brewster sez, "he Eminem Mosh video is using up 400Mb/sec of our bandwidth in the US and about 200Mb/sec in EU. This means we have distributed about 1 million copies of that video. this is a record for us, and since it is available from several other places, this is probably a record for the net."

Vote! < 2:41:54 PM>. .

I just voted. Please remember to vote. Vote, vote, vote. Vote! But just once. Remember: resoluteness in the face of disaster and ruin isn't a virtue. Emerging ideals and policies that reflect a changing world is what we need right now....

Guardian Unlimited | US elections 2004 | This is not a vote about ideas. It comes down to the verdict of a divided nation on one man < 2:19:04 AM>. .

Over the past five weeks I have not met one person who had a passionate word to say about Mr Kerry one way or the other. Though I don't doubt that some exist, the Democrats I have encountered are primarily motivated by their hatred of Mr Bush. "If they put up a vacuum cleaner against Bush we'd vote for it and just ask them to change the bag every now and then," quipped Gene Lyons, a columnist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Republicans are adversely galvanised by their love of Bush. "He stepped up to the plate and showed the world what we can do," said Chris Paxos, at a job centre in Canton, Ohio.

This is not an election about platforms or ideas. It has brought the issue of who owns America and what its values should be into stark relief. But it cannot answer them.

Today will be a referendum on one man - George Bush - and his record. Whoever wins will do so by a narrow margin and inherit a deeply divided nation. But, legal challenges notwithstanding, that will be tomorrow's story. And nobody is looking that far ahead.
