I think I mentioned this before, but it looks like Tuesday is going to be our snow day this winter. Every year it seems there is one day of the week when we get snow. This is our second snowy Tuesday. We will see what happens.

We continued talking about role models and heroes. The homework was to read the tapescript of the Frank Deford essay that we listened to in class and read the Russell Baker essay on heroes and role models. Both men used feet of clay and people understood the meaning, but wanted to know the origin. I didn't know and my guess that the origin was biblical was correct, but not in the context I said. This link will explain it for you.
During the holidays look over V. A and C. We will talk about them at the beginning of class on Jan. 7.

We listened to the Christmas Song in this class, too. I was surprised by how few people had heard this song. It is one of the Christmas standards. It was written by Mel Torme and Bob Wells in 1944.
Also people hadn't heard of any of the other major winter holidays and festivals. To learn more go to Monday's posting.
The homework for winter vacation is to read as many stories as you can from the Highlights Magazine that I gave you. If I don't see you at the Christmas party have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Today was the last class of the year, so we talked about Christmas and Japanese New Year's customs. We listened to the Christmas Song and in it there is a line about Jack Frost. He is hard to explain to people and I didn't know very much about his origins, but this site and this site will give you some information.

We had some interesting discussions about the 7 proposals for reducing school violence. People's opinions were pretty different on which of the proposals they thought would be the most effective and least effective.
In this class we also watched the Kawanzaa video and it was new information for everyone in the class. I mentioned that if you went to bluemountain.com you would be able to see some Kawanzaa greeting cards, but if you look at any card or shopping site you will see links for this holiday. Check the NPR after Christmas and there will be some special stories about this holiday. Please add a comment 1:52:49 PM
