We had a pleasant surprise tonight. Mai, a student from last year, is home for spring vacation and she has decided to take a month of classes. We also had couple of students do a substitution class.
We did the listening exercise which had three eyewitnesses talking about what they had seen. I was looking on the net for something about the reliability of eyewitnesses and came across this site. Take a look. It has a lot of interesting things.
In addition this I found this about the reliability of eyewitnesses in court cases: At the same time, numerous psychological studies have shown that human beings are not very good at identifying people they saw only once for a relatively short period of time. The studies reveal error rates of as high as fifty percent ム a frightening statistic given that many convictions may be based largely or solely on such testimony.
These studies show further that the ability to identify a stranger is diminished by stress (and what crime situation is not intensely stressful?), that cross-racial identifications are especially unreliable, and that contrary to what one might think, those witnesses who claim to be "certain" of their identifications are no better at it than everyone else, just more confident.

2K and 2L
We did pretty much the same thing in both Step 2 classes today, so I decided to combine them. People came up with interesting old sayings about the weather, but people thought it was hard to translate them into English.
We did the grammar exercise which was about using the passive form. The topic the book used to present the information was movie history. The exercise talked about the Lumiere brothers, The Jazz Singer staring Al Jolson. If you are a movie buff the web is a great place to find information about anything related to the movies.
The homework for next week is to write five sentences about an invention. Look at the book for sentence ideas. Also look at page 91. You don't need to write anything, but think about the answers to the questions. One more thing. Don't look at the reading exercise on page 92. Please add a comment 10:36:36 AM
