The all-important restore from backup of my contacts database and calendar went perfectly. To restore these important files from backup, go to the PC Suite application and choose 'Archive Manager'. From the list of files, select the following two files:

  • c:SystemDataContacts.cdb
  • c:SystemDataCalendar

Choose 'Restore Selected' and you should have your valuable data back.

One essential application that I purchased for the 9210, and can definitely recommend, is PsiLoc's TaskManager.

With it you can view the current memory usage, compress memory, reboot the device without removing the battery and shut down programs. Very useful!

Unfortunately 'java.sis' is missing an important file for displaying Java AWT graphics. This can be obtained from Forum Nokia. Look for cawtjar.sis at the Java download page. Install this to your memory card. This will enable all Personal Java applications to run on the 9210.
12:40:59 AM

For some reason the 'All_memory_card_data.SIS' file does not include the Java runtime. To install this find the 'java.sis' file from the 9210 CD-ROM and install it from control panel as with the previous .sis files. Install on the 'D' drive (the MMC card).

Once formatted I needed to install the standard applications. On the Nokia CD-ROM I found the following .SIS files:

  • All_Nokia_9210_data.SIS
  • All_memory_card_data.SIS

I have an MMC card reader on my PC so I found the easiest and fastest way to install these was to copy them to an MMC card and insert that MMC card into my newly formatted Nokia.

From the Nokia, I went to 'Extras' and ran the 'Control Panel' application, chose the Installer option and 'Install New'. I browsed to the MMC card and selected 'All_Nokia_9210_data.SIS' first. This was installed to the 'C' drive. That way the applications are always there even if the MMC card is removed.

Repeating this process for 'All_memory_card_data.SIS' file I chose to install this to the MMC card (the 'D' drive).

Most of the standard applications are now installed.

My reason for formatting the 9210 was a corrupt MMC card causing problems. My first step was to reformat the 9210 itself, then reformat the MMC card.

To format the 9210 you need to remove the battery, wait about 10 seconds then insert the battery again. Immediately open the screen and when the Nokia logo appears (the one with the two hands) press and hold Ctrl+Shift+F. At the prompt that appears, choose to format. This will take about 5 minutes.

I recently had to format and reinstall everything on my 9210 communicator so I thougth this would be a good time to start a weblog to document the process involved so I don't forget. And perhelps help anyone else who has to do the same task.
